The LAA Connector | We’re everywhere these days

Hey, have you noticed? LAA is absolutely everywhere these days! And we’re not even talking about LAA events (Flagship 2023 Opening Retreat and Program Kickoff & Homecoming).

As we emerged from the summer months and featured speakers, special recognition and award honorees were announced, Leadership Anne Arundel graduates were front and center, all over the place!

No wonder LAA is the Nexus of Leadership for Anne Arundel County. Just a handful of our leaders making news and having an impact are included below with loads of opportunities to show up in the coming months to celebrate their leadership!

LAA was pleased to be featured in this month’s What’s Up Magazine, and we were in good company! Here are our fellow graduates who are featured in this issue:

Mike Brady (FLG20) - p37
Tori Bayless (ELS07), Larry Ulvila (FLG95), Jan Wood (FLG97) - p38
Karen Brown (FLG22) - p48
LAA - Kris (FLG06), Griff (FLG96), Nancy(NLA16, FLG17) - p100

LAA was well represented at Maryland Hall’s #ArtsAlive celebration!

#Congratulations FLG23 Jackie Coleman and Nicole Kelsch! BRAVO! Great to see so many #LAA grads supporting the #Arts (and just a fraction pictured here)! #community #leadership #supportthearts

September 22nd brought a double header with too many LAA grads featured and present to lend their support than we can even name, first at the unveiling of the Best Place for All mural by NLA20/FLG21 grad Comacell Brown, Jr. and Cindy Fletcher-Holden.

Later that evening, LAA was the proud nonprofit sponsor and four LAA grads took the stage at Ignite Annapolis:

Past Board Chair and FLG10 grad Patrick Shurney

FLG09 Anne Brooks

FLG11 Elvia Thompson

FLG22 Chanel Compton

The next day, a whole host of LAA NLA and Flagship grads including Kyle Williams (NLA21), Toni Strong-Pratt (NLA18), LaToya Nkongolo (FLG18), Teona Hayes (NLA22) and Comacell Brown Jr. (NLA20/FLG21) gathered at City Hall in Annapolis in recognition of their leadership in the The Naptown Anti-Dope Movement(NAM).

And while all of these exciting happenings were happening, several rosters of Award Honorees were announced. We hope you will click on the links below and come out to celebrate the remarkable community leadership of the following outstanding LAA grads:

On October 11th we will join Tricia Sanborn (FLG22), and April Nyman (ELS09), of The Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, for the 22nd Annual Annie Awards featuring Chanel Compton (FLG22) as the Arts Leadership Award Honoree.

We’re excited to gather on November 3rd for the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County Celebration of Philanthropy featuring LAA grads:

Philanthropist of the Year Award: Carol B. Sisco (FLG22)
Corporate Philanthropist of the Year Award: Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland (LAA Gold Leadership Partner with many grads, including current Board Member Jeff Morales (FLG22), Travis Lamb (FLG15), and Candice Davis (FLG21) - plus Current Class Member Cindy Jones (FLG23)
Volunteer of the Year Award: Tatiana Klein (NLA06/FLG07)
Boots on the Ground Award: Bruce Morgenstern - LAA Board Member and FLG12

Looking forward to celebrating all of the honorees at the Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce Business Hall of Fame celebration on November 10th, and especially LAA Alumni: Arthur “Lex” Birney ELS 02, Jerry South FLG 94, Vicki Callahan FLG 96 and Fred Sussman ELS 15

And this just in: Nine regional businesses, agencies, and organizations have been nominated by schools and offices to be honored for their contributions to Anne Arundel County Public Schools students, programs, and schools at the inaugural Partners in Education Awards Reception in November. And TWO of the nine are individual LAA grads while two more are organizations chock full of many LAA grads:

Individuals:

Cheaper Than a Geek, nominated by Crofton High School - Chief Nerd is none other than LAA Board Chair Chris Barber (FLG16)
The Complete Player Charity, nominated by Glen Burnie High School - Founder & Executive Director, Andy Schindling (FLG19)

(So many LAA grads over so many years:)

Anne Arundel Community College, nominated by Broadneck High School
Rotary Club of Annapolis, nominated by Annapolis High School

The Education Foundation of Anne Arundel County Public Schools and Platinum Sponsor M&T Bank will recognize honorees at a networking reception later this fall at Live! Arundel Mills. The networking event will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. Click here to purchase tickets or sponsorships or contact Carol Ann McCurdy at 410-222-5829.

Add to these amazing opportunities a full roster of LAA events in the coming weeks and months, and there’s just no excuse for not tapping into the nexus of leadership in our county.

Let’s get to it!
