The LAA Connector | May 2022 | Look for the Helpers

Posted By Kris V. Shock, Tuesday, May 31, 2022

These are difficult times. I feel like I’ve been saying that in these blog posts for years now. Yet, with back to back mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, continued heartbreaking war in Ukraine and relentless COVID hurdles, it all can seem unbearable. How does one lead through these impossible times?

I know this much is true - in difficult times I find the will and spirit to continue pressing forward in spite of difficulties and heartbreak by seeking out and celebrating the community leaders whose dedication makes a difference in our own backyard. I follow Fred Rogers' advice and I look for the helpers.

When the events of the world seem overwhelming, focusing in on positive impacts of our local leaders inspires me to lead with more determination than ever before. And connecting with colleagues who persevere in spite of the weight of heartbreak and adversity, provides a deep well of hope and renewed energy.

If you are in need of such inspiration, there is no better gathering of community "helpers" than the 2022 Tribute to Community Leadership & Graduation on June 20th at Live Casino and Hotel. We will recognize the 2022 Excellence in Leadership Honoree, Hospice of the Chesapeake and the soon to be announced Distinguished Graduate honoree, celebrate the graduation of our 2022 Flagship and Neighborhood Leadership Academy classes and announce the Bertina Nick NLA Flagship Scholarship. I guarantee you will walk away with a cup overflowing with positive community connection and expanded opportunities to make a positive difference in the your community in the coming weeks and months. I hope to see you there!
