 Nilesh Kalyanaraman, MD, FACP has been the Anne Arundel County Health Officer since September 2019. Under his leadership, the Department of Health has focused on health equity, community engagement and addressing the social determinants of health. Addressing Covid, gun violence as a public health issue, mental health and substance use prevention and treatment, and food insecurity are a few of his priorities with the Department. Prior to the Health Department, for 13 years, Dr. Kalyanaraman, provided primary care and held various leadership positions at community health centers caring for the underserved. From 2012 to 2019, he was the Chief Health Officer at Health Care for the Homeless in Baltimore. From 2010 to 2011, he was an AAAS Science and Technology Policy fellow at the National Institutes of Health. He has served as a board member of the Maryland Dental Action Coalition and as the Research Chair of the National Health Care for the Homeless Council. In March of 2020, Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman was just six months into his new role as Anne Arundel county Health Officer when an unprecedented global pandemic changed everything.
