*In Association with Mattie’s Community Gardens* When LAA Flagship and NLA 2020 classes graduated virtually, online in June 2020 due to COVID, many expressed a desire for an opportunity to connect in-person so that Flagship and NLA 2020 grads could get to know each other.
Since then, we’ve realized the need to find more opportunities to cross-network our Flagship and NLA participants. That said, we know everyone is stretched thin on time and make it worthwhile, the ultimate goal of the gathering must be making a positive impact on our community, not just networking.
That’s when NLA19 and FLG20 graduate and LAA Board Member Dee Ward stepped up with a proposal for a community planting initiative.
Objective: Inspiring community investment and team work and empowering underserved communities to become self sufficient by planting and harvesting their own food.
Concept: Flagship and NLA 2020 and 2021 classes are invited to participate in the inaugural LAA Community Planting initiative under the leadership of Dee Ward.
Participants will pick up seed plantings to nurture at home via curbside pick-up in March. Instructions will be provided on how to get plants started at home.
Participants will be assigned a team in a designated community in Annapolis to plant the vegetables they started at home.
Community residents will harvest the vegetables to feed their community and nurture the gardens moving forward.
Due to COVID restrictions, we’re starting with just the current and last FLG and NLA classes. In the future we will expand to welcome all LAA alumni. We hope this event will become an annual activity to bring together LAA Flagship and NLA participants for years to come!
Thank you to FLG and NLA 20 and 21 Class and LAA Board Volunteers.
If you volunteered to participate in the Inaugural LAA Community Planting event, you will receive an email with a link to confirm your participation.
