The LAA Connector | Celebrating the Nancy Hartzell Era

This month we celebrate the Nancy Hartzell Era of Leadership Anne Arundel.

Three months ago, LAA’s Director of Operations, Nancy Hartzell shared with me that, having served LAA for more than nine years, she would be stepping down from her role at the end of this fiscal year.

That’s right – Nancy gave us three-month’s-notice of this transition, because that is Nancy Hartzell. Nancy’s warmth, professionalism and mission-driven dedication have become a hallmark of the LAA culture and experience.

As we put together a brief slideshow of Nancy’s tenure to share at the recent Tribute to Community Leadership and Graduation, a few key categories of photographs emerged - first, the HUGS and warm greetings, the SIGNAGE, the NAME BADGES and the COVID. Nancy and I were in the first year of working together when we were faced with keeping LAA participants safe and programs thriving through the global pandemic. There is no one I would want to weather a global pandemic with than Nancy Hartzell. My gratitude for her eternal can-do attitude, humor and determination is beyond words.

Before I came on board in this role six years ago, I relied on Nancy to help me navigate my LAA engagement. Fortunately, Nancy is a Lifetime Member and graduate of Flagship and NLA; So, while I wish her the very best in this next chapter, I will look forward to serving her for years to come to make sure she gets great value for her ongoing LAA Member Engagement.

While it will not be easy transitioning from Nancy’s leadership, I am proud to share with you that LAA is stronger than ever. We will be welcoming two new staff members in the coming weeks and preparing to welcome 52 members of the Flagship Class of 2026 in September. I hope you will join us and get to know them at the Program Kickoff & Homecoming event on Tuesday, September 30 at the Annapolis Maritime Museum.

There has never been a better time to engage with the Nexus of Leadership that is Leadership Anne Arundel.

Nancy, you've been so amazing in the short time we've had to get to know you. All the best in your new adventures!  I look forward to seeing you again at future LAA meetings and maybe just around town. :)

I can't remember any event or setting when Nancy did not greet with a warm smile. Great leaders leave positive lasting impressions like that - thanks for so many, Nancy!! Wish you continued best of health and happiness.
