ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 2, 2026) — Leadership Anne Arundel (LAA), the premier community leadership training and networking institute in Anne Arundel County, announces the recipients of the 2026 Distinguished Graduate and Excellence in Leadership Awards, to be presented at the annual Tribute to Community Leadership & Graduation Celebration on June 22.

Each year, LAA hosts a celebration honoring graduates of the Flagship and Neighborhood Leadership Academy programs, along with the Distinguished Graduate, Excellence in Leadership, and Bertina Nick Flagship Scholarship honorees. The Tribute to Community Leadership & Graduation celebrates more than 30 years of contributions, collaboration, innovation, and leadership. Nearly 2,000 LAA graduates have strengthened Anne Arundel County by serving across public, private, nonprofit, and government sectors—continuing to develop, nurture, and connect the next generation of leaders.

2026 Distinguished Graduate Award Honorees

The Distinguished Graduate Award recognizes exceptional LAA graduates who embody “the heart of community trusteeship” through notable contributions to the community. Honorees are selected by an alumni committee of past recipients.

SKIP AULD
Skip Auld has dedicated more than four decades to public and academic libraries across the East Coast, building a career defined by transformational leadership, community access, and the belief that libraries are essential anchors of civic life.

Since 2010, Skip has served as Chief Executive Officer of Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL), overseeing a $35 million budget, 16 branch locations, a central headquarters, and a team of more than 300 full-time staff serving over 600,000 residents. Under his leadership, AACPL has evolved from a traditional library system into a dynamic network of community-centered spaces — expanding access through new branches in Annapolis, Riviera Beach, Glen Burnie, and Discoveries: The Library at the Mall.

Skip has championed equity, inclusion, and intellectual freedom throughout his tenure, leading an organizational equity audit, establishing AACPL as a designated book sanctuary, and integrating public health and human services — including social workers, harm reduction resources, and vaccine clinics — directly into library branches.

A graduate of the LAA Flagship Class of 2012, Skip embodies the program's mission of collaborative, community-centered leadership. His cross-sector partnerships, culture of belonging, and commitment to serving marginalized communities reflect the enduring impact of his LAA experience. Skip will retire in early 2027, leaving behind a profound and lasting legacy throughout Anne Arundel County.

CHARLESTINE R. FAIRLEY, PHD
Charlestine R. Fairley, PhD, is a transformational educator, servant leader, and community champion whose career spanning decades has been defined by an unwavering commitment to equity, access, and human potential across Anne Arundel County.

As former Dean and Director of the Annapolis campus of Sojourner-Douglass College, Dr. Fairley built an institution rooted in possibility — actively seeking out individuals who did not believe higher education was within their reach and removing every barrier to get them there. Over her career, she has mentored hundreds of students pursuing advanced degrees, many of whom now serve as leaders across sectors throughout the region.

Today, as CEO of the Anne Arundel Community Action Agency, Dr. Fairley leads with strategic clarity and deep compassion, advancing programs in youth development, reentry services, and economic mobility. Her community leadership extends to the Anne Arundel County Workforce Development Board, the Healthy Anne Arundel Coalition, the 21st Century Club of Annapolis, and Anne Arundel Women Giving Together.

A graduate of the LAA Executive Leadership Series (ELS) in 2006, Dr. Fairley embodies the organization's mission through her lifelong dedication to collaboration, mentorship, and transformative service. Grounded in faith, lived experience, and an enduring moral compass, she leads with both strength and grace — shaping lives and strengthening communities one relationship at a time.

2026 Excellence in Leadership Award Honoree

Selected by the LAA Board of Directors and sponsored by Live! Casino & Hotel, the Excellence in Leadership Award recognizes an Anne Arundel County business or individual whose leadership has made a significant positive impact on our community.

ELIZABETH KINNEY

Elizabeth Kinney is a community leader and social entrepreneur whose career in Annapolis has been defined by a deep commitment to addressing homelessness and creating economic opportunity for those facing the greatest barriers. A Vanderbilt University graduate, she settled in Annapolis in 1981 and dedicated her off-hours to serving on nonprofit boards, including as President of the Friends of the Light House Shelter Board and President of the Annapolis Area Ministries Board. She graduatedfrom the LAA Flagship class of 1995 and went on to chair the Light House's $8.2 million capital campaign and ultimately serve as its Executive Director from 2011 to 2016. Upon stepping down as Executive Director, she transitioned into leading the Light House Social Enterprise LLC Board, overseeing the launch of the Light House Bistro and the Building Employment Success Training program — a workforce development initiative she helped design to connect shelter residents with culinary and facilities careers. She went on to found Rise and Shine Bakery, a nonprofit providing workforce training and employment opportunities in the baking industry for individuals facing employment barriers, and continues to serve as its President today. Through decades of innovative, mission-driven leadership, Elizabeth Kinney has helped redefine how Annapolis addresses homelessness, economic mobility, and human dignity.

Bertina Nick NLA Flagship Scholarship

The Bertina Nick NLA Flagship Scholarship is awarded to a graduate of the Neighborhood Leadership Academy. Named for activist and community leader Bertina Larkins Nick, the scholarship honors her lifetime of work in the county and remains the only full scholarship for the LAA Flagship Program.
The 2026 scholarship recipient will be announced during the event.

This year’s honorees represent a diverse group of leaders from the corporate, government, social services, healthcare, and arts sectors. They were selected based on having recently assumed an accepted, appointed, or elected leadership role that meaningfully impacts the Anne Arundel County community. Honorees were nominated by LAA alumni and members of the community at large and are not required to be graduates of an LAA program.

According to LAA President & CEO Kris Valerio Shock, “The New Leader Celebration provides an opportunity to come together to celebrate the vision, dedication, and passion of individuals stepping into new positions of leadership over the past year. LAA New Leader Honorees embody the spirit of innovation and collaboration that drives our community forward. Opportunity to donate blood and clothing too!

ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 18, 2026) – Leadership Anne Arundel (LAA), the premier leadership training and networking institute in Anne Arundel County, announces the 6th Annual Food Collection Event scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the M&T Bank parking lot, 170 Jennifer Road in Annapolis.

In partnership with the Anne Arundel County Food Bank, M&T Bank, UM BWMC, and Luminis Health, LAA is calling on community members to unite and make a lasting impact by donating healthy food and new clothing. This year’s event will once again offer the opportunity to donate much-needed blood through Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Blood Mobile.

The community is invited to participate by providing monetary donations at https://tinyurl.com/ycka52z2 or by donating healthy food and new clothing curbside during the event. Donations will also be accepted prior to April 18 at collection sites throughout Anne Arundel County, including participating M&T Bank branches. Additional collection sites and updates will be posted at www.leadershipaa.org/foodcollection2026.

Donations will support essential community partners, including the Anne Arundel County Food Bank, Luminis Blood Bank, and UM BWMC Clothing Closet. Items most needed include:

·       Canned meats

·       Peanut butter & jelly (plastic jars)

·       Boxed pasta & sauce (plastic jars)

·       Healthy snacks (breakfast bars, dried fruit)

·       Cereal

·       Soups and canned meals

·       Mac and cheese

·       Baby food

·       Ensure and nutritional supplements

·       Infant and adult diapers and wipes

·       Toothbrushes and toothpaste

·       Deodorant

LAA alumni are invited to register on the LAA website to volunteer by directing donors and assisting with the collection, sorting, and loading of food and blood donations.

“What began as a way to bring our alumni together during the extraordinary early days of the COVID pandemic has grown into a beloved annual community service event,” said LAA President & CEO Kris Valerio Shock. “We are proud to continue amplifying the generosity and leadership of the LAA community and look forward to surpassing last year’s impact. Nominations must be submitted by Friday, March 13, 2026. Pending receipt and review of all nomination materials, the LAA Executive Committee will select the honorees to be recognized at the event. Nominees do not need to be graduates of an LAA program; however, they must meet the following criteria:

·       Newly accepted, selected, appointed, or elected to an executive-level position

·       Position began between March 2025 and March 2026

·       Leadership role serves and/or impacts the Anne Arundel County community

·       Position may be held within a nonprofit, government, or for-profit organization

LAA alumni and members of the community are encouraged to submit nominations by completing the Nomination Form no later than March 13, 2026. Honorees will be notified and formally invited to attend on or before Monday, March 30, 2026. Each year, this sold-out event honors individuals who have stepped into new leadership roles and demonstrated exceptional commitment to the betterment of Anne Arundel County. Flagship is LAA’s signature program, offering an intensive curriculum focused on civic engagement and leadership development. Each class represents a cross-section of Anne Arundel County, reflecting the county’s ethnic, social, economic and geographic diversity.

“LAA’s Flagship Program offers an unmatched experience that deepens your understanding of the forces shaping our community while immersing you in a diverse network united by commitment and service,” said Kris Valerio Shock, President & CEO of LAA. “By connecting, learning, and leading together, participants help strengthen and shape a vibrant, adaptive future for Anne Arundel County.”

The 10-month program begins in September 2026 and concludes in June 2027. Participants meet monthly for full-day sessions focused on topics such as Government, Economic Development, Cultural Arts, Education, Health & Human Services, Law & Public Safety, Environment, and Agriculture/South County. Participants engage directly with leaders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors, explore critical regional issues, and develop the tools needed to serve effectively as community leaders.

Leadership Anne Arundel Kicks Off 2025-2026 Program, 

Announces Next Class of Leaders 

 

Leadership Anne Arundel (LAA) is kicking of their program year with an exciting new Flagship Class of 2026.  Some of the area’s brightest nonprofit, government and business leaders, composed of a cross-section of the Anne Arundel County community representing ethnically, socially, economically, and geographically diverse populations, are joining the organization to facilitate growth of community leadership. 

The ten-month Flagship program kicked off with 52 participants this week at Historic London Town & Gardens and Honey’s Harvest Farm with a two-day opening retreat. Following the retreat, participants will be expected to engage in community knowledge sessions for one full day each month. Program topics include Government, Economic Development, Cultural Arts, Education, Health & Human Services, Law & Public Safety, Environment, and Agriculture/South County.  

Since 1993, LAA has been building, connecting, and celebrating community leaders through education, information and networking. With a mission of developing diverse networks of resourceful, informed, and proactive leaders, LAA is helping to create a more vibrant County. 

According to Kris Valerio Shock, President & CEO of Leadership Anne Arundel, “The Flagship program is about building connections, fostering collaboration, and equipping leaders to create lasting impact across Anne Arundel County. We are thrilled to welcome such an impressive and diverse group of leaders into the Flagship Class of 2026. Each participant brings unique skills and perspectives that will strengthen not only their class experience but also the broader community.”

Kelly Anderson – FLG20 – A graduate of the LAA Flagship Class of 2020, Kelly Anderson is a diligent and dedicated manager with 18 years of experience in homeless service provision.   For the last 5 years, Ms. Anderson has been the Director of Sarah’s House, a non-profit shelter for those experiencing homelessness.  Her main focus has been ensuring that the program is fiscally responsible, and that programming remains relevant in the ever-changing landscape of human need.  Kelly prides herself on leading her team in a way that ensures growth for the program, staff, and those they serve.  A former elementary education teacher, she is passionate about learning and believes that education and exposure have the ability to change the world. 

 

Kelly also serves on a variety of Anne Arundel County and Associated Catholic Charities boards and committees, including the Coalition to End Homelessness, Harm Reduction Advisory Committee, Trauma Informed Care Committee, Coordinated Entry Committee, and the Advocacy Committee.  

 

Emily Owens Channell – FLG24 – A graduate of the LAA Flagship Class of 2024, Emily Owens Channell is the Director of Talent Acquisition for Eagle Title / Liff, Walsh & Simmons. Prior to joining Eagle Title, she served as District Human Resources Partner with Target in both the Philadelphia and Baltimore regions. Emily grew up in York, PA and earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and subsequently earned her MBA. Additionally, Emily has earned her Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) certification.

Each year, LAA hosts a celebration honoring the graduates from the Flagship and Neighborhood Leadership Academy classes along with the Distinguished Graduate, Excellence in Leadership, and Bertina Nick Flagship Scholarship Honorees. The annual Tribute to Community Leadership & Graduation celebrates more than 30 years of contributions, collaboration, innovation, and leadership. It is a joyful evening recognizing graduates from LAA’s core programs, alongside honorees who embody the spirit of leadership in action. To date, more than 1,800 LAA graduates have transformed Anne Arundel County by serving across public, private, nonprofit, and government sectors—ready to develop, nurture, and connect the next generation of leaders.
 
2025 Distinguished Graduate Award Honorees:
The Distinguished Graduate Award recognizes exceptional LAA graduates. Recipients are individuals who have adopted “the heart of community trusteeship” and have made significant and notable contributions for the betterment of our community. Distinguished Graduate Honorees are selected by an alumni committee of past recipients.
 
Charles Madison (Flagship 1995)
Since 2016, Mr. Madison has served as Managing Executive of the Asymmetric Operations Sector at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), where he leads over 1,600 professionals working on some of our nation's most critical security, health, and operational challenges. His work spans Homeland Protection, Special Operations, Cyber Operations, and National Health, and under his leadership, the sector has advanced both in technical excellence and strategic national importance. Mr. Madison’s service on boards such as United Way of Central Maryland – Community Partnership of Anne Arundel County, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Housing Commission underscores a long-standing dedication to equity, education, and innovation.
 
 
Andy Schindling (Flagship 2019)
Mr. Schindling is the founder and Executive Director of The Complete Player Charity, Inc. which is a youth empowerment non-profit organization focused on building confidence, character and emotional intelligence among targeted elementary and middle schoolers in northern Anne Arundel County.   His passion and dedication to empowering the youth of Anne Arundel County is evident in everything he does. Mr. Schindling defines commitment when it comes to serving, mentoring, and uplifting the next generation.
 
 
The 2025 Excellence in Leadership Award Honoree:  Carlene Cassidy (Flagship 2005)
Selected by the LAA Board of Directors and sponsored by Live! Casino & Hotel, the Excellence in Leadership Award recognizes an Anne Arundel County business or individual who has made a significant local impact to our quality of life.
 
Carlene Cassidy is CEO of the Philip E. and Carole R. Ratcliffe Foundation. She is an entrepreneur, coach, mentor, and educator working with programs to inspire innovation and job creation. Prior to joining the foundation, Carlene was the founding Director of the Entrepreneurial Studies Institute at Anne Arundel Community College where she also served as a professor for eighteen years. She also spent more than a decade in corporate leadership roles including Partner and Chief Operating Officer for a multi-million-dollar, regional computer consulting firm. In addition, Carlene co-authored three management related textbooks published by South-Western Cengage Learning.  
 
The Bertina Nick NLA Flagship Scholarship is awarded to a graduate of the Neighborhood Leadership Academy. The scholarship is named for activist and community leader Bertina Larkins Nick recognizing her lifetime of work in the county. It is the only full-scholarship available for the LAA Flagship program. The 2025 scholarship recipient will be announced during the event. 
 
The event will take place on Wednesday, June 25 from 5:30-8 p.m. at The Hall at Live! Casino & Hotel. The program will include inspirational multimedia, remarks from featured guests, award presentations and recognition of graduates from the 2025 Flagship and Neighborhood Leadership Academy classes.   Sponsorship Opportunities are available. Following nine years of dedicated service to Leadership Anne Arundel, Nancy Hartzell will be stepping down from her role as Director of Operations at the end of this fiscal year (June 30).

The "bitter" part of this bittersweet news is obvious to anyone who has worked with Nancy during her tenure with LAA. There is simply no replacing Nancy Hartzell. Over the last nine years, Nancy's mission-driven professionalism and unwavering commitment to serving LAA's mission and membership have become hallmarks of the LAA experience. Prior to stepping into my current role, I personally counted on Nancy to help me navigate the benefits of LAA Membership. Since joining Nancy on the Staff side six years ago, I have been deeply grateful to serve beside her, benefitting from her unwavering care for and commitment to the organization. 

The "sweet" part is that Nancy is not going away, rather she's looking forward to engaging with LAA as a Lifetime Member. As a graduate of NLA16 and FLG17, Nancy assures me she will remain involved and present, simply as a LAA Member instead of on staff. She has certainly earned that! 

So that leads me to my request for help. We are very fortunate to have Nancy on staff through the end of this fiscal year, and we would very much like to hire an Operations and Membership Manager (Part-time, 25 hours/week) within the next several weeks so that they will have the opportunity to work directly with Nancy for several weeks before she steps down. Our greatest connections consistently come from the LAA community, so my request is that you share the job description with your network and ask anyone interested in learning more, to contact me directly.

On a related note, we're working to confirm a budget including a second full-time position for LAA at the start of the new fiscal year (July 1). The full-time Director of Programs and Events job description will be available in the next couple of weeks. While filling the part-time role is our top priority so they have the benefit of overlapping with Nancy, we expect to begin interviews for the full-time role toward the end of May. 

The great news is that we'll have the opportunity to celebrate Nancy's nine years of service to LAA at the upcoming Tribute to Community Leadership & Graduation on June 25 at Live Casino & Hotel.

This year’s honorees are a mix of citizens who are corporate, government, social services, healthcare and arts executives. They were selected based on commencing an accepted, appointed, or elected leadership role that impacts the Anne Arundel County Community. LAA Alumni and the community at large nominated the honorees—they do not have to be a graduate of an LAA program.  

 

According to LAA President & CEO Kris Valerio Shock, “The New Leader Celebration provides an opportunity to come together to celebrate the vision, dedication and passion of individuals stepping into new positions of leadership over the last year.  LAA New Leader Honorees embody the spirit of innovation and collaboration that drives our community forward. As we acknowledge their hard work, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering leadership that develops, connects and inspires a brighter tomorrow.” 

 

The New Leader Honorees will be recognized at a breakfast celebration on April 30 at Carrol’s Creek Café in Annapolis. Registration is required for this event.
