It's Time to Renew Your LAA Class Dues (posted 8/4/11)

Dear LAA Graduates,

As we kick off our 2011-2012 program year, please consider renewing your class dues. This yearly contribution from you, our alumni, will not only keep you engaged with LAA, but provide vital support for our programs and organization. Consider what your support of LAA has helped accomplish and our vision for the future.

LAA is proud to say we are over 1,100 graduates strong. Last year, we added 65 new graduates to our community from the Flagship, Executive Leadership Series and Neighborhood Leadership Academy programs, while our 29 member inaugural Fellows class successfully launched its project, Ready Chesapeake, Inc. We reconnected with alumni through social events and happy hours around the county. We secured a record number of new Leadership Partners, sponsors and donors to fund our quality programs and outreach efforts. LAA ended the year with a festive Tribute graduation in June and immediately kicked off this new program year with a successful Summer Serenade fundraiser on Gibson Island in July.

What's ahead for LAA? We are growing our popular Fellows program and expanding LAA's reach to a new Youth Community Leadership program. We are planning 3 free Fireside Chat breakfasts, starting off with our first topic on October 28th, Our Local Federal Reserve: What It Does For Us, by Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond Board Member Rick Morgan. LAA is partnering with more organizations than ever, exploring more serious issues facing residents and businesses, and making a significant impact in Anne Arundel County.

What can you do? Pay your dues to stay connected with us. Get invited to great social events and Fireside Chat breakfasts, receive LAA's E-Newsletter and more. As a new offering, contribute $100 or more to LAA's Annual Fund and your class dues are waived this year!

In addition to your dues, we need your active involvement on our committees to improve programs and to continue to make an impact in this county. Contact us to sign up.
We hope that you will join with us in our continued efforts to be a force for positive change in Anne Arundel County. Please take a moment today to pay online from our Home Page or download the form and mail it to us.

With appreciation,

Tom Marquardt

LAA Selects Neighborhood Leadership Academy Class of 2011

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 7, 2011) - Leadership Anne Arundel (LAA) has selected 12 people from throughout Anne Arundel County to participate in its Neighborhood Leadership Academy (NLA) Class of 2011.

Currently in its tenth year, NLA is targeted to emerging leaders in neighborhoods throughout the county, providing them with the skills and experience they need to become community leaders. It is the only program of its kind in the state of Maryland.

"We are very pleased at the caliber of the members of this year's NLA class," said Tatiana Klein, NLA Planning Committee Chair. "They are enthusiastic and engaged, and will help Leadership Anne Arundel achieve its goal of bringing people together to create more effective communities."

NLA sessions are led by people who are familiar with the challenges and opportunities of grassroots communities. The NLA curriculum combines skills concepts and practical applications. Participants learn soft skills such as leadership skills, community trusteeship, communication styles and creativity. These are combined with more concrete skills such as conducting meetings, developing financial statements and applying for grants.

NLA class members participate in community projects, including one that aims to close the racial and ethnic gap in test scores in local schools. Another project will provide a curriculum-based support program for the middle-school-age children of addicts.

NLA participants meet for 14 sessions through June, roughly every other week. In June, the class will graduate with other Leadership Anne Arundel classes at LAA's gala event, "A Tribute to Community Leadership." Other LAA programs include the Flagship Program, the Executive Leadership Series, and the Leadership Fellows Seminar Series.

Leadership Anne Arundel's mission is provide people of diverse backgrounds with the education, resources and networks necessary to become successful, proactive leaders. During its 17 years, Leadership Anne Arundel has trained more than 1,000 people to become community leaders. LAA graduates have become involved in many non-profit boards, local governments and other organizations, and have launched a number of successful community programs.
